viva brazillia presents. view from madelines couch and yemanja

The View From Madeleines Couch
VFMC is the unique OzBrazilian group based in Brisbane, Australia, playing Brazilian & Brazilian inspired original music. With a line-up led by the vibraphone, the band creates a sound truly distinct from any other Latin group in the country.
The Music:
Samba, bossa nova, forro, samba-reggae, batucada, (played with reverence, but not replication!), and original music born out of a great love for the brilliant rhythms and harmonies of Brazil.

The Band:
Kym Ambrose, vibes & percussion, Anje West, vocals & percussion, O.J. Newcomb, bass & percussion, Mark Henman, drums. The fifth Coucher is alternately one of these fine guitarists: Jamie Clark, Jim Kelly or Bruce Woodward.

TVFMC regularly spread their musical good vibes around Brisbane, gigging at live music hotspots Ric’s Bar and The Press Club, interspersed with touring, festival appearances, private parties/celebrations, and high profile corporate events. (Nothing like a slinky bossa to encourage ‘networking!’).

YEMANJA
Australian soprano Anita Fernandes and Brazilian classical guitarist Edson Gazani are innovative composers and captivating performers, and have even been described as musical anthropologists - uniting the music and culture of our current diverse global community with all the zest and appeal of today's popular music.

Since their formation in London ten years ago the duo have been passionately creating and developing their unique sound throughout many different continents, taking their music to stages all around the world including Brazil, Italy, France, Greece, the UK, Germany, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

The Australian-based, multicultural acoustic duo have struck a positive chord with audiences around the world for their fun-loving mix of jazz, samba, bossa nova, gypsy jazz, classical, folk and Euro pop.

After her many years of classical, jazz and contemporary vocal training, Anita has now honed her own trademark style and been likened to influential divas of present and late centuries such as Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Bush, Edith Piaf, Gal Costa and Amália Rodrigues.  Alternatively Edson, with his effortless creativity and knowledge of Brazilian music, follows in the style of the Brazilian masters Baden Powell, Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque.
Together this striking duo are musical pioneers, creating music which is in the middle road of contradiction; contemporary, yet reminiscent of the golden age of popular music.  Their sounds have been described as progressive yet traditional, sweet yet daringly deep and surely guaranteed to warm your heart.

subtrakt presents.

subtrakt returns.

scott walker - scott’s mission since first stepping up to the decks eight years ago has always been to deliver quality music to the masses, and his versatility is the most valuable weapon in his arsenal. In the past he pushed his passion for progressive and tribal rhythms, and tech-funk flavoured breaks, and is now focussing his passion for deep house, tech-house, and the more melodic strains of minimal. That's not to say he can't still smash out a peak time set of main room tech though. Scott's ability to blend such diverse elements together ensures that every set is a smooth ride no matter how wide the musical spectrum. His technical skills perfectly complement his superb track selection, with Scott fully exploring the possibilities of the DJ set-up without ever over-doing it. By utilising his preferred setup of two turntables, three CDJs and a Pioneer 800 mixer, he is able to elevate his DJ sets to another level through the use of acapellas, loops, FX and bonus beats. Yet the emphasis, as always, remains on reading the dancefloor, and Scott’s floor filling abilities are without peer.

mike redfern - From his beginnings, Mike has shown a passion for genres ranging from minimal, electro, tech and progressive house through to twisted breaks. This diversity of influences shines through in his Dj sets, enabling him to take his crowd on a unique journey through sound. Currently Mike promotes and is resident Dj at LOGIC; a night with the aim to drive a new series of quality events, whilst making a commitment to supply dance floors with a unique mixture of underground music. In 2006/07 LOGIC’s reputation has gone from strength to strength with artists including James Holden, Paolo Mojo, Martinez, Steve Porter, Meat Katie, Jono Fernandez, Dirt Crew and Jimmy Van M gracing the turntables. Add to these internationals a number of other local events, the LOGIC events are fast becoming one of the leaders in the underground music scene in Brisbane. Mike and the LOGIC crew continue to consistently draw large crowds by promoting events with upfront and exciting artists and this is set to continue with one of the leaders of the Australian Electronic Community Jamie Stevens from INFUSION the next to join the lads. His ability to push musical genres beyond their normal limits has helped Mike establish himself amongst the best Dj’s in the minimal/tech, dirty house, breaks and progressive sounds that Brisbane has to offer and his sets continue to incorporate a very diverse and unique sound.

future classic label night 2 presents. jimi polar

With more than a few releases up his sleeve, Jimi Polar has embarked on a journey of musical discovery. Drawing on the exploits of various underground boutique record labels and more than a handful of locally made unavailable productions. Jimi Polar works about making you dream some more on the dancefloor. With a cheeky grin and unmistakable poise he sets about taking you where you least expected, weaving a pattern cast from electronic sounds, close-knit vocal edits and bootlegs of things you'd forgotten about. Records still feel great, every time they find a new slot in the mix.

His local productions from Sydney and Byron Bay have been cast across the airwaves, with regular guest appearances on JJJ, FBI and select exposure through internet-based music streaming radio. Occasionally a new title pops up unexpectedly on Beatport without too much of a fuss people seem to find it. Released either through Junkbeats (Byron Bay) or on Future Classic (Sydney), even more recently through a small progressive label called Kindred based from Perth, Western Australia.

He began his quest for a worldwide ticket to play his styles long ago, perhaps 10 years or more. Through his work with collective groups Junkbeats and 20 for 7, and more recently with his label mate Jamie Lloyd from Future Classic he has generated a small ripple in the Australian electronic music scene. With a successful solo release with the moniker of "Monster Park" on Future Classic drawing attention from Laurent Garnier, and a worthy collaborative effort aptly named the "Beatle Pusher EP" with Jamie Lloyd. Earlier releases for NRK Sound Division (UK), Soma (Glasgow) and West Coast US house labels Detour, Nightshift and Tango, these latter with friend and colleague DJ Hipp-E (H-Foundation). The self made section of his record collection is starting to gain some extra width. Last year saw him complete a smoking remix of Kidzen's "Burn", bringing solid dancefloor appeal to an otherwise nu-jazz, free-beat styled release.

Jimi Polar has many more adventures to come. With only 4 years DJ experience behind him he has picked up a style and flow normally expressed by more experienced vinyl technicians. But then he's been playing music since he was 5 years old, developing early an ear for perfect pitch, good timing, musical phrasing and pure tension and release. It may be these age old fundamentals that see him enjoying a wide exposure of music to this day, but it might also be the pure sense of fun he exhibits every time he slides back the cardboard sleeve of a new release.

Together the duo formed with Jamie Lloyd has seen last minute billing of almost every major festival in Sydney. With raving reviews from the Sounds Festival, Playground Weekender, The Great Escape, Pete's Ridge, Surry Hills Festival and Earthdance. The lads have also been regular guests for the best-known underground party in Sydney, Mad Racket, performing alongside Jamie Lidell and Greg Wilson. Other local supports include Mo'Wax founder James Lavelle, Copenhagen's Who Made Who (J+J upstaged Kid Kenobi who ran out of records), Supermayer (Kompakt), Alex Kidd (F-Communications), Fred Everything (Lazydays), Kruder and Dorfmeister (G-Stone), Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area - New York) and Felix Dickinson (San Francisco).

saturday 5th july

white rino - beats & art exhibition

To be able to book, and play alongside an artist the calibre of Mark Pritchard is an incredible oppurtunity and an honour for us. He is respionsible for creating the "Greatest ambient album of the decade" (The Gaurdian) with Tom Middleton as Global Communications.

He has worked with artists such as Aphex Twin!! (Aphex doesnt cop bullshit. To work with him is an honour very, very few producers and musicians have had) and produced classic Drum and Bass for LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records label.

His other project work with Tom Middleton as Jedi Knights won them a massive underground following and they and became known for no-messing heavy beats and bass lines combined with an inimitable funkiness. They also incorporated elements of hip-hop and electro boogie giving them a distinctive and instantly recognizable sound.

As their reputation grew they picked up remix work together, producing amazing reinterpretations of Lamb and Azymuth and Warp 69. Meanwhile, Mark developed his own midtempo sound, which can be heard on his remixes for Orb /Stereopeople /Cosmos/ KRS-1/ Tribe Called Quest, which have all become underground classics.

Given a chance to fully explore his love of Hip Hop and easy listening- he has produced his Harmonic 313 EP on Warp Records. Named after the frequency produced by planets turning on their axes, which it is believed other beings use to navigate the universe - the name betrays his deep interest in outer space and in discovery and science fiction. Using a seductive 60s vibe combined with weird science Mark has produced some of the most interesting instrumental hip-hop to come out of the UK recently.

He is currently foucussing his musical ideas into the Dubstep sound and has been working on production with Mala (Digital Mystiks).

Personally weve got no fucking clue what this guy is going to play... last time we heard him was at a festival in the country in NSW and he played psycadellic African samba beats, Dubstep and Jungle the likes of which we have never heard and will probably never will hear again, but it was well above and beyond anything we had heard a dj play before and it blew our minds into into an extreme dimension. sunday 6th july

luca bacchetti

Luca Bacchetti is definitely a force to be rockoned with in today's house and techno scene. His background of soul, hip hop and even drum & bass has given him the right foundation to become one of the future international stars of Dance music. Luca cut his teeth in the scene with a Radio show on club Culture, which gave him the initial notoriety and deserved push to start playing clubs in and around Italy. he later found a niche for himself playing and producing quality funked-up house and techno alongside his friend and radio show partner Antonio Pocai, which helped him getting noticed even further. The thing that differentiate Luca's work from the myriads of other producers out there is a strong identity in his music. His productions have the right amount of funk with a sprinkle of darkness and an essentially great groove which makes its tracks irresistible on the dance floor. Since 2005 he has produced several successful 12's on Tenax Recordings, the label run by Alex Neri. His real rise to fame came in 2006 with a stellar re-work of Bini & Martini - Stop, which was number 1 in the Beatport download charts for two weeks and was charted by many top Djs around the world.
